Top 5 Sitter Safety Tips For Parents

When it comes to the safety and well-being of children, one can never be too cautious. We recognize that not all families are able or wanting to use an agency to find sitters or other childcare providers and we believe that knowledge is an incredibly important aspect to keeping your kids safe. So we want to share some expert advice that we hope will help you if you decide to hire a nanny on your own. You may also want to consider participating in one of our Sitter Safety Webinars for parents to get more in depth advice from our experts.

Here’s What You Need to Know.

1. Online nanny finder sites should be used with extreme caution. Anyone can create an online profile and many candidates have not undergone a thorough screening process. If you do decide to use online sites, understand that they are not agencies. So be sure to do your own extensive screening process before offering a candidate the position. Our agency has a DIY Screening and Consulting program for families that want to find a nanny on their own but still want to use our robust screening tools.

2. Not all background checks are created equal. Many online background checks only scratch the surface and simply give you a false sense of security. In our Webinar Series we will teach you the difference between some background check services and how you can get the most accurate information on a candidate.

3. Just because someone you know and trust referred someone, doesn’t make that sitter safe. People commonly refer nannies and sitters who go from one family to the next but no one has ever taken the time to do an actual background investigation or screening process. Referrals should be given the same careful screening as any other nanny or sitter you are considering. When a nanny or sitter you are considering is uncomfortable or impatient with this, consider it a red flag.

4. Honesty really matters. If a sitter or nanny can lie about the small stuff they can lie about the big stuff. While it might not seem like a big deal when your nanny fibs about her age, exaggerates her experience or says she fed and watered the dog when she really forgot to, this is not something that should be taken lightly. You should consider what other untruths you have been told and how this could affect the quality of care your family is receiving.

5. Interviews and reference calls are a must. (Even for your occasional date-night sitter who lives down the street.) Anyone who is spending any length of time with your kids should undergo a formal, in-depth, in-person interview. Reference calls should also aim to dig deep into a candidate’s past performance. You should also be comparing the information the nanny gave you in the interview with the information shared by her references to look out for any inconsistencies.

WE HELP FAMILIES THRIVE.

Why We’ve Bought 825 Boxes of Girl Scout Cookies

By – Rosalind Prather, Co-Owner of Trusting Connections Nanny Agency

It was a day in early January 2016 that I came across an article about the Girl Scouts Cookies program being the largest “girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world.” Caroline and I were in our fifth year of business and I started reminiscing about our journey as young, female business owners.

While our agency was still relatively new it felt like we had made it.  We had just opened our second location in Southlake, as two tiny fish in the massive ocean that is the DFW Metroplex. And we were making it happen. We were steadily growing year after year, had begun hiring office staff to help with day-to-day operations and we were giving ourselves a decent paycheck. We were 24 when our agency began with our first location in Tucson and looking back it seems hard to believe that we thought we could pull this off. Truth be told, we had only dreamed up the idea of one small agency. But fate held a much larger objective for our venture – one we still probably haven’t fully realized.

TC best babysitting service - best year!

And as I thought about this article and the girls that had shown up on my doorstep all dressed up in their uniforms or the girls standing outside of grocery stores mustering up the courage to ask if I wanted any cookies…I realized that these little girls and I had something in common. Despite the odds against us as young women entrepreneurs, we were boldly stepping forward with a dream of turning our passions into profits. I knew in that moment that as women business owners, we had an obligation to do our part to inspire and support the next generation of lady leaders. It occurred to me that the reason Caroline and I had the courage to start our business was because of other women (like my own mom) paving the way, who made us believe that it was even possible. And so it was then, that Caroline and I made a promise to buy cookies from every Girl Scout who came to our office.

We wanted to make it educational for the girls, so asked that they come with a sales pitch. It wasn’t just about supporting their cookie sales although that was a big piece of it. We are proud to say that as of today, this event has generated about $8,250 for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona – approx. 1,650 boxes of cookies sold (with the help of other women business’ owners participation the last two years.) Our intention was to also give the girls the experience of meeting a relatively young female entrepreneur and to hopefully inspire the girls to dream about their own possibility of business ownership one day. That first year, the girls also walked away with a bookmark that read, “She believed she could so she did.”

They came in droves, Some with signs. Some with songs. And all with stories. That first year girls were spilling out into the lobby and waiting for a chance to speak to Caroline and I. We felt totally honored. And we quickly realized that this offer to buy cookies and inspire girls did something much more than we ever expected. It inspired us

We met a girl who had reached her own cookie box selling goal and gave away some of her extra points to another girl in her troop to help her reach her goal. If only grown up women could more consistently show one another the same support and lift each other up.

We met a girl who had sold thousands of boxes tirelessly going door to door and even made her own business cards.

We met a Girl Scout in middle school who had aspirations of starting a babysitting business with her best friend. She was the same age Caroline and I were when we became best friends and we offered to take her and her friend out to lunch to talk business and told them that maybe they might be our competitors some day.

We asked one little girl, about 6 years old who had sold quite a few boxes of girl scout cookies, what her best sales technique was. She paused and thought really hard about it before responding definitively and proudly. Her answer? “Begging.” We laughed.

We met a girl who did her entire pitch in sign language.

We met a girl who was trying to get boxes donated to the military in honor of her dad who was deployed.

We met troops who had done amazing things with their money, using it to support local charities and causes. Proof that even the littlest people can make a big difference.

One of our favorite moments this year was with an incredible young lady who started a charity project and is sewing pouches that attach to walkers for seniors. She shared with us that she is just donating them and we asked her if she had thought about selling them because we were so impressed with how beautiful they were! Because it wasn’t something she had considered, we talked to her about the cost of materials, the amount of time she spent completing one piece, the value of her time, etc. After doing some number crunching with her, we asked her what she thought a fair price would be. She decided $15 was reasonable and then we asked if we could buy the sample she brought in to show us. She was so surprised! What an honor it is to be this amazing inventors’ first customers!

This event has become a beloved annual tradition and one that my business partner and I agree is our favorite event of the year. This was the fifth year that Caroline and I have made that same promise to Girl Scouts and while it’s changing and growing (this year we had three other women business owners who joined us and made the same pledge and we’ve had to move the event to the Girl Scouts offices since ours was no longer big enough to hold the crowds)… the spirit of the event has remained the same. It’s a celebration of the accomplishments and powerful potential of girls and young women. The leaders. The fearless dreamers. We wholeheartedly agree with the Girl Scouts of America’s belief that girls can change the world.

And just like Caroline and I didn’t know the full capacity of what we were destined to accomplish when we first started out, we hope that the girls who attend our event walk away feeling like they, too, can achieve incredible things. They already are.

Easy as 1,2,3 Nursery Set Up

One of the most FUN aspects of pregnancy, besides growing a baby, feeling their movements and hiccups, choosing a name, registering for baby items and having a baby shower is setting up the nursery.  It doesn’t have to be overwhelming or daunting, make it FUN! Choosing themes, picking colors, building furniture or just unboxing it and setting it all up makes it finally feel real.

There is no specified time to begin setting the nursery up.  Do it when you: feel ready, have the furniture, help is in town or wait till after the baby arrives and you see what you really want and need.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends “room sharing because it can decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50% and is much safer than bed sharing. In addition, room sharing will make it easier for you to feed, comfort, and watch your baby. Room share—keep baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep for the first 6 months or, ideally, for the first year. Place your baby’s crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard in your bedroom, close to your bed.”(https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sleep/Pages/A-Parents-Guide-to-Safe-Sleep.aspx)

No matter the size of your house, your room or your child’s room, you can make the space work. Some families start with their baby(ies) in a bassinet or pack n play right next to their bed and some families choose to place their baby in the crib the first night home.  The choice is ultimately what works best for you!

The main three pieces of furniture in the nursery are typically the crib, changing table and a chair, rocker or glider. Think long term if you’d like your furniture to grow with your child. Here are some easy and helpful hints for setting up the nursery:

Crib check out safety requirements at (https://www.cpsc.gov/Business–Manufacturing/Business-Education/Business-Guidance/Full-Size-Baby-Cribs_

  • Placed near the door for visual purposes
  • Away from windows (screen safety, drapes and window blind cords)
  • Placed near or on an inside wall, outside walls can be cold or drafty
  • Away from electrical outlets, hanging shelves or under a vent (blows directly on baby)
  • Firm, fitted mattress, no bumpers, toys, blankets, etc
  • Mobiles need to be high enough and should be removed once baby can push up on hands and knees or can sit up

Changing table/dresser (not an absolute necessity if space doesn’t allow)

  • Secured to the wall with furniture straps
  • Sturdy and stable base
  • Use concave shaped changing pad with straps and always keep a hand on the child
  • Keep diapers, wipes, and other items nearby but out of reach of child

Chair, Rocking chair or Glider (not a necessity if space doesn’t allow)

  • Wide seat base (comfortably fits your body, baby and a nursing pillow)
  • Padded arm rests
  • If glider or rocker make sure to have a STOP LOCK mechanism when not in use

Super easy set up.  Top it off with a night light (that does not get hot to touch) so you can see for middle of the night feedings and wake times. Make sure all area rugs have non slip pads underneath them, cover all electrical outlets, make sure you have a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in the nursery and throughout the house, if you have a toy box (make sure it has spring loaded support or safe hinges as not to pinch tiny fingers) and use furniture straps to secure ALL tall and heavy furniture (dressers, changing tables, bookshelves, etc).
